Plagiarism Policy

Wasatha: Jurnal Studi Islam dan Humaniora is committed to maintaining the highest standards of academic integrity and originality. Plagiarism in any form is strictly prohibited and will result in serious consequences.

A. Definition of Plagiarism

Plagiarism includes, but is not limited to:

  • Copying text, figures, tables, or data from other sources without proper citation or permission
  • Paraphrasing or rephrasing others' ideas without acknowledgment
  • Self-plagiarism: Submitting the same or substantially similar work to multiple publications
  • Inappropriate citation practices or citation manipulation
  • Using previously published material without proper credit
  • Translating someone else's work without permission and acknowledgment

B. Plagiarism Screening Process

  1. Initial Screening: All submitted manuscripts undergo plagiarism screening using professional software (Turnitin or iThenticate) upon submission.
  2. During Review: Revised manuscripts are screened again before final decision.
  3. Pre-Publication: Accepted manuscripts undergo final plagiarism check before publication.

C. Similarity Threshold

  • Maximum allowed similarity: 20% (excluding references and bibliography)
  • 15-20%: Minor revisions required with proper citations
  • 21-30%: Major revisions and re-screening required
  • Above 30%: Immediate rejection without review

D. Authors' Responsibility

Authors are required to:

  • Conduct a plagiarism check on their manuscript before submission
  • Attach the plagiarism report (from Turnitin or iThenticate) at the time of submission
  • Ensure all sources are properly cited and acknowledged
  • Obtain permission for any substantial use of copyrighted material

E. Consequences of Plagiarism

Severity Consequence
Minor (less than 10% unoriginal) Warning and request for revision
Moderate (10-20% unoriginal) Major revisions required; resubmission after correction
Severe (20-30% unoriginal) Immediate rejection; author banned for 2 years
Very Severe (above 30% or deliberate plagiarism) Immediate rejection; author banned for 5 years; reported to institution

F. Post-Publication Plagiarism

If plagiarism is discovered after publication:

  • The article will be retracted according to COPE Retraction Guidelines
  • A retraction notice will be published and linked to the original article
  • All authors will be notified and may be banned from future submissions
  • The author's institution may be notified

G. Use of AI Tools

  • AI tools (ChatGPT, etc.) cannot be listed as authors
  • Authors must disclose if AI tools were used in manuscript preparation
  • AI-generated content without attribution is considered plagiarism
